Turkey Adopts Updated MRL Regulation

At the beginning of this year, Turkey's Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock adopted an updated Regulation on Maximum Residue Limits of Food Codex Pesticides establishing and updating MRLs on various food and animal commodities (link in Turkish). These MRLs are currently in effect.

This updated regulation is part of Turkey's effort to harmonize with MRL values and standards maintained by the European Union. It should be noted that MRLs established in this regulation are not always aligned with MRLs currently enforced by the EU, as the EU frequently updates its MRLs.

Adopted and updated MRLs from this regulation will display in the Global MRL Database by April 1, 2017.

EU Notifies WTO of Draft MRLs

This week, the European Union notified the WTO of proposed MRLs for fenpropidin, pymetrozine, and mercury compounds.

The final date for comments is May 27, 2017 (fenpropidin and pymetrozine) and May 28, 2017 (mercury compounds). Relevant proposed MRLs will display in the Global MRL Database by March 30, 2017.

On March 28, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a technical report on the outcome of the consultation with Member States, the applicant, and EFSA on the pesticide risk assessment for acetic acid in light of confirmatory data.

USDA Publishes FAIRS Country Report on Jordan

On March 28, the United States Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service published a Food and Agricultural Import Regulations Standards (FAIRS) Country Report for Jordan.

Information on pesticides and other contaminants is included in Section III of the report. The Global MRL Database currently displays relevant established and proposed MRLs for Jordan.

FSANZ Publishes Approval Report for Avilamycin MRLs

On March 23, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) published its approval report for Application A1133 – Maximum Residue Limits for Avilamycin in specific Pig Commodities.

The Application is for the establishment of MRLs for avilamycin in specific pig commodities for purposes of import harmonization. FSANZ has provided further details on the risk assessment in Supporting document 1.

The Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation (the Forum) has been notified of FSANZ's decision and, if the Forum does not issue a request for review, the MRLs will go into effect upon gazettal.

On March 21, the Australia Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) published Gazette No. 6 – 21 March 2017. Pages 24-25 of the gazette list draft MRLs and pages 30-33 list amendments to MRLs for pesticides on various commodities.

Comments on the draft MRLs must be submitted to APVMA by April 18, 2017. Relevant proposed and amended MRLs will appear in the Global MRL Database on March 22, 2017.

On March 20, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) published draft amendments proposing changes to the monographs for quizalofop-P, pyriproxyfen, fluazinam, formetanate, fenpropathrin, thiophanate-methyl, and fipronil (links in Portuguese).

Comments on these proposals must be submitted by April 18, 2017. Relevant proposed MRLs have been added to the Global MRL Database.

On March 20, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) published amendments for chlorfluazuron, spinetoram, cyproconazole, clethodim, azadirachtin, amicarbazone, azoxystrobin (proposed via Consulta Pública n° 296 and n° 306), halosulfuron-methyl, indaziflam, linuron, mepiquat chloride, propaquizafop, triclopyr, thiodicarb, tebuconazole (proposed via Consulta Pública n° 304 and n° 308), and iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium.

MRL changes from these amendments will be displayed in the Global MRL Database on March 21.
