Matt Lantz Travels to Korea and Japan to Work on Regulatory Harmonization

From March 1 to March 7, BCI’s Vice President for Global Access, Matt Lantz, traveled to Seoul, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan to work on regulatory harmonization issues.

While in Korea, Matt met with the US Embassy to discuss market access issues for several clients.  He also followed up with several registrants from the Korea Pesticide Maximum Residue Level Symposium held early in February. Korea will overhaul its pesticide regulatory system on January 1, 2019.

In Tokyo, he met with the US Embassy and Japanese food processors to talk about expanding the current access for US potatoes to Japan.  He also worked on regulatory approvals for crop protection products in the market.

On February 9, Ann Stevenson gave a presentation on BCI's Food Additive Database at the California League of Food Processors (CLFP) Expo. The presentation provided an overview of food additive regulations and testing policies for Canada, Mexico and Japan – markets important to U.S. exporters. Ann demonstrated how the Food Additive Database can help U.S. food companies comply with complex international regulations.

James Christie, President and Managing Director, and Tye Blazey, Director of Sales and Marketing, also attended the expo. The team manned a booth and provided demonstrations of BCI's regulatory data products.

CLFP is the largest tradeshow in California devoted specifically to food processing. It is attended by over 2500 industry members from 11 countries.

Matt Lantz attends Korea MRL Symposium

On February 9th and 10th, Matt Lantz, BCI Vice President for Global Access, attended a symposium in Seoul with the US and Korean governments on Korea's upcoming Positive List System for pesticide maximum residue levels (MRLs). 

This new system will be fully implemented in December 2018.  By that time, hundreds of new MRLs will need to be established at acceptable levels in order to avoid trade disruptions.  Efforts are underway to ensure the new Korean system is implemented on time and in such a manner that consumers are protected and trade can proceed.

Alyson Segawa Part of Judge Panel at U.S. Culinary & Mixology Competitions in Mumbai

International Marketing Accounts Manager Alyson Segawa participated as a guest judge for a premium culinary & mixology competition at the UpperCrust Food and Wine Show in Mumbai, India on January 27-29, 2017.   

The competitions featured over 16 established chefs and mixologists from luxury hotels and establishments across Mumbai and West India. The prime objective of this campaign was to highlight the uniqueness of U.S. premium agricultural products to the Indian HRI industry.   

 

UpperCrust Food & Wine Show is organized by UpperCrust Magazine which is India's finest Food & Wine Magazine and one of the leading trade fair organizers in India.

On January 5, 2017, Matt Lantz, BCI Vice President for Global Access spoke to the US potato industry at the annual Potato Expo in San Francisco.  Matt covered how the potato industry is addressing international pesticide maximum residue levels (MRLs) in global trade.  He spoke about how the industry has organized itself to seek harmonized international standards so US potato exports are not hindered.

BCI International Marketing Accounts Manager Alyson Segawa spoke at technical education seminars on behalf of the Cranberry Marketing Committee (CMC) in New Delhi and Bangalore, India. Alyson provided an overview of the U.S. cranberry industry's generic marketing promotions globally along with related marketing case studies showcasing the potential of U.S. cranberry products.

Additionally, Alyson presented technical information on the health benefits related to cranberry consumption to 200 key influencers from local trade sectors and press.

Eric Rosenberg and Matt Lantz Speak at Washington Small Berry Conference

BCI's Vice Presidents Eric Rosenberg and Matt Lantz spoke at the Washington State Small Berry Conference in Lynden, Washington on December 1.  Their topic was export possibilities in Asia for Washington blueberries and raspberries.  Matt Lantz spoke about opening new Asian markets for fresh product, handling differences in foreign regulations, and the impact that the delay in implementation of Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement will have on exports.  Eric Rosenberg reviewed three studies BCI conducted for the Washington blueberry industry on export prospects to Korea, China, and India.

Stephanie Swinehart Joins BCI-Seattle

Stephanie Swinehart joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Seattle office in November 2016 as a Research Assistant on the Regulatory Data Services team. Stephanie monitors international regulatory updates, analyzes foreign and domestic technical regulations, and performs data entry and quality assurance for the maximum residual level (MRL) database. Additionally, she writes for the customized subscription newsletter, the BCI Monitor, and the MRL News service, researches international food safety policies, and conducts database demonstrations for clients.

Prior to joining BCI, Stephanie worked in international community economic development both as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal, West Africa and as a project assistant for an international development non-profit in Malawi. Stephanie is a graduate of Saint Louis University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (concentration in Economics) and International Studies, with minors in Political Science and French.

Matt Lantz Chairs MRL Discussions at USAEDC

On Wednesday, November 16, Matt Lantz, BCI's Vice President for Global Access chaired a panel discussion at the US Agricultural Export Development Council (USAEDC) in Baltimore, Maryland on pesticide maximum residue levels (MRLS) and their growing effect on international agriculture trade.  Officials from the US potato and Wisconsin ginseng industries also spoke as to how this issue has challenged their abilities to export. 

Lantz reviewed the regulatory changes that have come into effect over the last 15 years from markets as diverse as the European Union, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, and Costa Rica and provided recommendations on how to address differing standards and rejections.  He also demonstrated GlobalMRL.com, Bryant Christie Inc.'s proprietary database that compares international MRL standards among countries.  The seminar was well attended demonstrating the growing concern associated with this issue.

On Tuesday, October 25, 2016, BCI Vice President for Global Access, Matt Lantz, spoke at the World Trade Organization in Geneva Switzerland on private sector priorities with pesticide regulations in international trade.  Matt was one of three private sector speakers invited to present at this government-only event. 

In his panel and subsequent discussion, Matt stressed the need for transparency and harmonization of pesticide maximum residue level (MRL) regulations among markets.  He outlined challenges agriculture trade face as a result of this issue and offered suggestions on where improvements could be made. BCI is a leader on this issue and owns GlobalMRL.com, which has the most up-to-date MRL information available.  

The meeting also provided Matt the opportunity to hold one on one discussions with officials from the European Union, Canada, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Brazil, Argentina, the Dominican Republic and many others.   BCI was pleased to have the opportunity to speak at the WTO.

On October 10-11, 2016, BCI's Director of Research Julie Cerenzia and Research Assistant Kristine Farwell attended the USDA-USAID Conference on Food Assistance and Food Security in Des Moines, Iowa.  The conference, held on the sidelines of the annual World Food Prize, brought together a cross-section of development project implementers; U.S. commodity groups; private and nonprofit firms; federal agencies with a variety of mandates; and the research and scientific community to explore challenges and solutions to improving long term food security and nutrition. 

One aspect of this endeavor is improving sanitary and phytosanitary practices and regulations in developing countries to foster local market development, integration into the global food and agriculture marketplace, and improved food quality and safety.  With longstanding expertise in this area, BCI looks forward to contributing to the development of local and import markets that can provide a safe, nutritious, and diversified diet in the developing world.

Alyson Segawa Speaks at Technical Education Seminar and Attends RECA Tradeshow In India

From September 27-30, 2016, BCI Manager, International Marketing Accounts Alyson Segawa spoke at a technical education seminar and participated in the Restaurant & Catering Show (RECA) on behalf of the Cranberry Marketing Committee (CMC) in Mumbai, India. Alyson provided an overview of the U.S. cranberry industry and CMC's generic marketing work globally. Mr. Thomas L. Vajda, U.S. Consul General in Mumbai, along with other dignitaries, led the inauguration ceremony for the U.S. Premium Agricultural Products booth at RECA.

The primary objective of this campaign was to highlight the uniqueness of U.S. premium agricultural products to the Indian HRI industry. The Restaurant & Catering Show is the only event in India exclusively serving the restaurant and foodservice industry.

Daria Mikhalchenko joins BCI

Daria Mikhalchenko joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Sacramento office as a member of the firm's international marketing team in October 2016.  She assists with client financial accounting, audit preparations, grant writing, and the implementation of clients' MAP-supported international marketing programs.

Daria graduated from the University of California, Davis with degrees in both Managerial Economics and International Relations.  As an undergraduate, Daria worked as the Marketing Manager of Unitrans Transit System, and participated in Morgan Stanley's Financial Training Program.  She has also spent time traveling through central and southern Europe.

Matt Lantz attends European Commodity meetings in Munich

On Wednesday September 28, Matt Lantz, BCI's Vice President for Global Access attended the European Union's Commodity Expert Working Group (CEG) in Munich. This officially sanctioned group brings together commodity groups from across the EU to discuss issues facing European specialty crops.  Matt attends as part of the hop component of the meeting to discuss and coordinate regulatory policies between the US and European hop industries.  Matt is the only American member of this European organization.

Eric Rosenberg Speaks to American Association of Candy Technologists

The American Association of Candy Technologists held their annual National Technical Seminar from September 19 – 21 in Chicago.  Eric Rosenberg, BCI Vice President was invited to speak this year on regulatory obstacles facing U.S. candy exporters as they develop international sales.  Eric covered a variety of topics including packaging and labeling regulations, food additive maximum use limits, contaminant policies, standards of identity, and more.  The event was attended by over 250 professionals from the sweet goods industry.

Founded in 1947, AACT is a premier professional group of individual technologists, operations personnel, educators, students, business staff and others dedicated to the advancement of the confectionery industry.

Sarah Gelpi Hooker joins BCI

Sarah Gelpi Hooker joined Bryant Christie in September of 2016 as a member of the firm's international marketing group. Sarah assists with writing and administering grants related to the United States Department of Agriculture export assistance programs, and works with a number of clients to implement their organization's promotional activities.  Strategic planning, project management, and financial management are all a part of her responsibilities.

Prior to joining BCI, Sarah worked as the International Marketing Manager for the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA), a non-profit agricultural trade association. At SUSTA, Sarah worked closely with the southern State Departments of Agriculture to develop SUSTA's international marketing strategy. She also managed SUSTA's international marketing budget and activity implementation.

Sarah is a graduate of the University of New Orleans, with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and a minor in Spanish. Additionally, she holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of New Orleans with a concentration in International Business. Sarah has also studied in San Ramon, Costa Rica through the University of New Orleans, and at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

Annual U.S. and Korean bilateral agriculture negotiations were held this week in Seattle.  BCI took the opportunity to host both negotiating teams at its offices.  The reception was co-sponsored by a variety of industry organizations and featured food, wine, and beer from California and the Pacific Northwest.  Following the negotiations, Alyse McConnell, BCI's Manager of International Regulatory Affairs accompanied the negotiators on a tour of Northwest blueberry production.

Matt Lantz Meets with Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety Official

On Wednesday in Hong Kong, BCI's Vice President for Global Access, Matt Lantz met with Dr. Ho of Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety.  This is the organization that is responsible for food safety in Hong Kong. 

Several BCI clients have an interest in the latest Hong Kong food safety regulations, especially with regards to maximum residue level policies.  Dr. Ho was able to explain the latest developments, which will allow US shippers to be better prepared when exporting to Hong Kong and to ensure their product is compliant with the latest Hong Kong regulations.  The meeting occurred at a reception for US agriculture officials at the Hong Kong Consul General's residence.

During the week of August 6, James Christie (BCI President), Matt Lantz (Vice President for Global Access), and Tye Blazey (Director of Database Sales) participated in Asia Fruit Expo, the largest fruit and vegetable trade show in Asia, which occurs annually in Hong Kong. 

This year, BCI had a booth where we demonstrated our Global MRL Database for trade show participants.  The database has the most up-to-date and accurate information on chemical residue standards in the world.  Subscribers to the database are allowed to easily determine what standards are approved in specific export markets, which allows them to avoid potential trade issues when shipping.

On August 22-26, Ann Stevenson and Jeffery Mitchell, members of BCI's regulatory data services team, attended the Introduction to Food Science program at Rutgers University.

The week-long course covered a range of topics including food chemistry, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, color, flavor, food processing, and microbiology.

This course work on the application of food science principles provides context to the regulations Ann and Jeffery analyze on a daily basis for BCI's International Food Additive Database.

Karlee Kirking joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Seattle office in September 2016 as a Research Assistant on the Regulatory Data Services team. Karlee researches and analyzes international food regulations to assist in updating and auditing BCI's Food Additive and maximum residue level (MRL) databases. She also monitors for changes to food additive regulations and policies and writes for the BCI Food Additive News as well as BCI's customized subscription newsletters, the BCI Monitor.

Prior to joining BCI, Karlee was a Latin American and International Sales Coordinator for a heavy duty automotive company in the Seattle area. She is a graduate of the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies, Spanish, and Economics with a minor in Global Political Economy.

Will Callis joined Bryant Christie Incorporated in July of 2016 as a member of the firm's international marketing group. Will assists with writing and administering grants related to the United States Department of Agriculture export assistance programs.  He is also active in activity implementation and financial management.

Prior to joining BCI, Will worked as an agriculture market analyst for a global leader in precision agriculture equipment.  While there, he focused on international market size estimation and performance quantification.  He was also responsible for annual sales budget estimation and regional sales analysis.

Will graduated with honors from Colorado State University with Bachelor of Science degrees in Animal Science and Agricultural Economics with a concentration in natural resource economics.  He also holds a Master's degree from Kansas State University in Agricultural Economics.

BCI Exhibits at IFT Annual Meeting & Food Expo in Chicago

Tye Blazey (Director of Sales, GlobalMRL.com) and Ann Stevenson (a manager in our Regulatory Data Services group) attended the IFT Annual Meeting and Food Expo in Chicago in July.  The IFT Food Expo provided an excellent opportunity to demonstrate BCI's data services to those most affected by the ever-growing volume and complexity of international regulations, including  professionals in Research and Development, Quality Assurance, Product Development and Regulatory Affairs.

The Institute of Food Technologists' (IFT) annual exhibition is the largest food science and technology event globally.  For more information about IFT please visit their website.

BCI hosts Canadian media members for California Harvest Tour

On July 28 and 29th, Will Callis and Alicia Adler hosted Canadian media members for harvest tours in the California Central Valley.  The morning July 28th was spent first in a California Cling Peach orchard in Modesto, California where media members learned about the process that helps bring California Cling Peaches from bloom to when they are picked at the peak of ripeness and sent to the cannery.  The afternoon completed the peach processing cycle when the media members toured a peach and apricot cannery in Lodi, California where they tasted a variety of delicious products. 

Friday July 29th began with a tour of a California Bosc pear orchard in Walnut Grove, California.  There they learned about the proper technique used to pick a pear.  They then toured a nearby packing plant where they were treated to an impressive display of the speed and care that goes into packing fresh pears.  The day was completed at local restaurant where the media members were able to taste locally produced pear cider.

As we reported last month, Alyson Segawa, one of BCI's International Marketing Account Managers, participated in Food Hospitality World (FHW) tradeshow in Bengaluru, India on behalf of the U.S. Cranberry Marketing Committee (CMC).

FoodLinked TV asked Alyson to say a few words at the FHW Bangalore tradeshow about CMC's participation. This was CMC's first round of India GBI culinary and mixology competitions, which also included a booth presence. Click here to view the video.

FHW is one of India's largest professional tradeshows for trade and consumers in the food & hospitality industry. Last year, the show witnessed about 6,000 visitors and showcased more than 250 exhibitors.

Bruce Pinto Joins BCI

Bruce Pinto recently joined Bryant Christie Inc. as a Manager of Database Development, and is responsible for the architecture, development and maintenance of BCI database systems.

Prior to joining the firm, Bruce was a Database Engineer for Enprecis, an international research and analytics company for the automotive industry. At Enprecis, Bruce led the migration effort of multiple OEM tracking systems into a consolidated database providing for a more stable code base and improved functionality across all vendors for sending and managing emails, SMS, and postcards.  He is well versed in database development, administration, warehousing and architecture.

Bruce is an engineering graduate of UC Davis and has an MBA from the University of Washington.

David McCaleb Speaks at Washington Beverage Export Summit

On June 29, David McCaleb gave a presentation at the Washington Beverage Export Summit.  The summit was held at McMenamin's Anderson School in Bothell, and was organized by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.  Approximately 25 representatives from wineries, breweries, distilleries, and cideries were in attendance.  Mr. McCaleb spoke on regulatory requirements that are relevant for alcohol beverage exporters.

Alyson Segawa attends Food Hospitality World in India

From June 9-11, Alyson Segawa, one of BCI's International Marketing Account Managers, participated in Food Hospitality World (FHW) tradeshow in Bengaluru, India on behalf of the U.S. Cranberry Marketing Committee (CMC). CMC implemented their first ingredient and mixology competitions in India at FHW where participants were challenged to present unique recipes utilizing U.S. cranberries and other premium U.S. agricultural products. The special event was organized in association with the South India Culinary Association (SICA), with competitions featuring 55 recognized hotel chefs and mixologists showcasing their exemplary skills.

CMC also exhibited at a joint booth where samples were distributed and Alyson provided information to trade and media on the taste, versatility, availability, and health benefits of U.S. cranberry products. Mr. Adam Branson, Senior Agricultural Attaché for Agricultural Affairs of the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, inaugurated the show.

FHW is one of India's largest professional tradeshows for trade and consumers in the food & hospitality industry. Last year, the show witnessed about 6,000 visitors and showcased more than 250 exhibitors.

Alyson Segawa attends Juiceful Istanbul Summit

On May 26th, Alyson Segawa, one of BCI's International Marketing Account Managers, attended the 7th Juiceful Istanbul Summit, sponsored by the Turkish Juice Industry Association (MEYED).  Over 145 key decision makers from the fruit juice industry participated, including representatives from 70 different organizations and institutions.

In addition to participating in the Summit, Alyson met with Turkish importers, distributors, and juice manufacturers during the week to discuss the Turkish market.  She also conducted retail visits to assess opportunities within the juice and dried fruit categories.

BCI President James Christie was in Washington, DC during the week of May 9th to meet with congressional leaders and trade officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.  James was working on tariff and non-tariff barriers facing BCI clients with a focus on food and agricultural issues.  The future of the Trans Pacific Partnership free trade agreement was a key topic of the discussions.

Prior to joining BCI, Julie founded a management consulting firm.  Her firm provided research, analysis, strategic planning, and advisory services to Montana businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies.  

Before opening her business, Julie had a ten year career in the U.S. Department of Commerce.  She worked in various positions within the International Trade Administration, coordinating U.S. government advocacy for U.S. firms; providing subject matter expertise on international finance and investment; serving as the Department's liaison to the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC); and working closely with the Project Finance division of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank).  Julie began her career with the Montana Department of Commerce, managing international tourism promotion for the state, and served briefly as the Assistant International Affairs Coordinator for the Governor of Montana.

Julie holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy from George Mason University, a Master's degree in International Relations and International Economics from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and a B.A. in Political Science from Montana State University.  She has lived in Italy, Scotland, and England, and studied briefly in Germany.

James Christie Visits AGQ Laboratories

On April 28, 2016, BCI president James Christie visited AGQ Laboratories in Oxnard, California.  AGQ provides laboratory analyses and technical assistance for a variety of products including agricultural commodities.  Based in Spain, AGQ's global network has been expanding rapidly in recent years including a growing presence in the U.S.

Bryant Christie Inc. (BCI) and AGQ are teaming up on work involving maximum pesticide residue levels on food and agricultural products.  Expect more information on this growing collaboration soon.

Matt Lantz Attends CEG Meeting in Brussels

On April 25 and 26, BCI Vice President for Global Access Matt Lantz attended the European Union's Commodity Expert Group (CEG) meeting in Brussels.  Matt is one of two Americans who has been invited as a member of the EU group. 

Matt works with the European hop industry to ensure that information between the EU and US hop industry on technical crop protection issues are shared.  The group meets twice a year to review the growing situation in both markets and to determine what steps are needed to ensure a high quality crop is produced.  Efforts to harmonize the regulations and standards between the two industries are a priority.

Jeffery Mitchell Joins Bryant Christie Inc.

Jeffery Mitchell joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Seattle office in February 2016 as a Research Assistant on the Regulatory Data Services team. Jeffery conducts research and analysis on international food regulations to assist in updating and auditing BCI's maximum residue level (MRL) and food additive regulatory databases. He also monitors for worldwide food additive regulation developments and writes about the latest regulatory news for the BCI Food Additive News and BCI's customized subscription newsletters, the BCI Monitor.

Jeffery graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor's of Art in International Studies. Prior to joining BCI, he worked as an educator in Southeast Asia.

Matt Lantz Meets with Philippine Department of Agriculture

On Friday, March 18, BCI Vice President for Global Access, Matt Lantz met with the Philippine Department of Agriculture's Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority to learn more about how the government of the Philippines regulates crop protection tools.  Matt travelled to the meeting with USDA officials from the US Embassy in Manila.  While there, Matt, USDA, and the Philippine Department of Agriculture officials identified several areas of mutual cooperation regarding harmonizing international regulatory standards that affect agriculture exports from both the United States and the Philippines. 

Additional engagement on these issues is expected in the coming year to avoid trade barriers when exporting to third markets.

BCI Attends "Make in India Perspective" in Bellevue

On February 25th, BCI's International Marketing team members Alyson Segawa and Brianna Trafton attended the seminar “Business Opportunities in India – The Make in India Perspective” in Bellevue, WA.  The event was hosted by the Consulate General of India in San Francisco and Indo-American Friendship Forum (IAFF), in coordination with the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle.  Speakers included executives from Amazon, Boeing, and Microsoft, as well as aerospace consulting and agriculture technology firms based in India.

Discussions for the day highlighted the advancements India is making in infrastructure, banking, manufacturing, and other sectors, and the market potential for opening new businesses.  Amazon's summary of current e-commerce activities and opportunities in India was of particular interest, as BCI represents U.S. agriculture cooperators interested in exporting and promoting to the Indian market.

BCI Participates in Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Germany

BCI president James Christie spoke at Fruit Logistica in Berlin on February 5, 2016.  Fruit Logistica is one of the largest annual produce shows in the world.  In 2016 the show had over 2,800 exhibitors and 70,000 visitors.  The show covers all sectors of the fresh produce business and provides a complete picture of the latest innovations, products and services at every link in the international supply chain.

James' presentation focused on food safety drivers in the U.S. and included background on the U.S. Food Safety and Modernization Act.  Topics covered included microbiological, chemical (pesticide maximum residue levels), and other factors, and how retail requirements are impacting suppliers of fresh horticultural products.  The presentation examined how both U.S. government and private sector standards are influencing the U.S. retail landscape.  James also reviewed food safety developments internationally including the changing Asian landscape for pesticide maximum residue level (MRL) regulations.

Maria Buchen Joins Our Technology Group

Maria Buchen joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Seattle office in January 2016 as a member of the firm's technology group.  Her responsibilities include development and execution of testing activities, creation of test designs and test case tracking, as well as design and development of test automation efforts to assure the quality of BCI's software applications.

Prior to joining the company Maria was a software test analyst with the Forte Group in Chicago.  She was responsible for developing and executing testing activities for an E-book reader and accompanying applications.  She coordinated and oversaw the cooperation between manual and automation testing teams in their automation efforts.

Maria studied Classical Literature and Slavonic studies at the University of Cologne.  She is fluent in German and Russian languages and proficient in Hebrew.

Morgan Heimbeck Joins Our Technology Group

Morgan Heimbeck joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Seattle office in November 2015 as a member of the firm's technology group.  He assists in supporting various on-line products and services for BCI.  Specifically, he is responsible for utilizing new technologies while developing client websites, online databases, and customized web applications.

Prior to joining the firm, Morgan was the lead frontend engineer for Trade Tech, a software as a service (SAAS) provider for international trade and logistics.  He started with the organization as a customer service representative and application designer, and later moved to the development team where he developed a web application for international freight forwards, NVO's, and Common Carriers.  While there, Morgan also managed a team of developers and was exposed to international trade regulations and procedures.

Brooks Erickson, International Marketing Manager at BCI, raises a glass with master mixologist Eddy Yang during a Cranberry Media Appreciation event at the W Hotel in Guangzhou earlier this month.

Around 30 media members participated in the event which included an educational seminar on US cranberries, a cranberry beer tasting by local brewer Rocky Wang, and a cranberry cocktail masterclass by China's premier mixology expert Eddy Yang.

The Cranberry Marketing Committee's program in China frequently works with both trade and consumer media to further increase awareness about the availability, versatility, and health benefits of US cranberries in the market.

Michelle Paul and Michael Shumyater tour Blue Diamond Growers Processing Facilities

Michelle Paul and Michael Shumyater, both members of BCI's international marketing team, joined USDA FAS marketing specialist John Rice on a Blue Diamond Growers field and processing tour in Sacramento, Turlock, and Salida, California on December 7 and 8, 2015. During this tour, Blue Diamond's high food safety standards, attention to maintaining a high quality product, and the large variety in end products were highlighted.

Hosting USDA FAS officials on agriculture tours are an important means to communicate the importance of export markets to key influencers.
